My father plays music for the elderly community and wanted to find a couple of song books that he would be able to use while on his outing with the elderly care centers. The songs are old traditional bluegrass and the writing is done very well. My father had a hard time with how small the writing was it was difficult for him to read and play at the same time. We ended up sending this specific book back not due to the good but due to my fathers inability to read it at the same time and he was playing the music. The start of the book seem to have some good history and I found it to be excellent for someone who has pretty good eye sight. I would recommend this book to other as overall it was great. Just didn't work for my father.

This is a very elementary book for banjo beginningers. If you want to sing along with these tunes and they are not in the right key you will need to transpose the chords. All the songs are in just two or three keys, so don't expect to sound like an expert. But it's a great way for an absolute beginner to start playing some bluegrass. I bought the book because I am taking bajo lessons and my instructor likes to use Wernick's instruction book. In that book you will find suggestions on how to transpose chords. Like all banjo playing, it's a bit of an art. Enjoy!

this was the book my guitar instructor suggested for my practices... I think it is a little advanced for me, but so far, looks like a great book. I have been able to play a few of the songs already. I am very satisfied with it and I'm sure when I have been playing the guitar a little longer it will become one of my favorite go to books.

Notation is terrible. Not written in musical notation - uses ersatz tab for just strings 2,3, and 4 of guitar. No indication of rhythm. Bummed.

I bought the book as a source for bluegrass songs, but found it offered much more in the way of advice for a beginner in bluegrass music.I like the discussion of transposing songs to fit the key of your voice by learning the songs in the keys of G and D and then using a capo to alter the key to your voice. I know what a capo does, but never thought of being able to cover ALL 12 keys by using it and learning the song in both keys. That itself was worth the price of the book. (At least used! :-)I also like the inclusion of tab for the melody/solo of the song. That too can be transposed up the neck to fit the key of the singer's voice.Finally, I like the way they underline the word in the lyrics that occurs on the first beat of the song. As a beginner singing unfamiliar songs, I find this immensely helpful.Oddly enough, I also bought a DVD on bluegrass jamming and just noticed it is also by the author of this songbook. Entitled Bluegrass Jamming by Peter and Joan Wernick, I found it the perfect mate to the songbook. The DVD covers basic bluegrass techniques for beginners for guitar, banjo, mandolin, and banjo. It then moves on to have the band play 16 bluegrass songs for you to play along with. Printed music is included for your benefit. I found the pages to be small so I had them enlarged on a photocopy machine and it works great for me. My understanding is there are 3 DVD in this series. This is the middle DVD. The others are Beginner Bluegrass Jamming and Intermediate Bluegrass Jamming.I skipped the beginner DVD, but will eventually get the Intermediate DVD if I get pased this DVD!

Great songbook excellent customer service.

The choice of songs in this songbook is excellent. It's full of good, often played bluegrass songs. The guitar tablature for the songs is the most unusual I've ever seen, but it does trace out the simple melody for the tunes for those not familiar with them. Also, the rhythm designation, which only shows the downbeat for each measure leaves much to be desired. I like to see tablature with markings for half, quarter, eighth notes, etc. so I can get the full rhythm, not just the downbeats. Bluegrass songs have many versions of lyrics as perfomred by different artists, but I like the lyrics chosen in this book very much. Still, in summary, it's a lot of good, often played songs all crammed into one book.

OK I cheated I bought this for myself, figuring that my skill level as a non-Persian adult was probably on about the level of a Persian child. And I was right! This is a great book if you want to dip your toe in the charming New Year customs of the Persian world (Iran, Afghanistan, Kurdistan) with recipes that are easy to follow.

As a cook and a cookbook collector, I was very excited to get this book, expecting to be like all other books of Mrs. Batmanglij; unfortunately not so well. It looks like fabricated plan with some great recipes ( repeated in her other books) with some very unusual crafts trying to make this festivities as much as possible American. I guess it was meant to be good but not meeting my expectation.Not much recommended as her other books.

I really like the book - the easiest to use of all of her cook books. As the mother of two children with an Iranian father, this book really helped us to incorporate celebrating Nowruz into our family traditions. The bean soup (ash-e resh-te) recipe was great. We made the cream puffs and that turned out delicious (couldn't get the temperature reading she suggests, but they were fine anyway). I also made red rice with green beans (a childhood favorite of my husband's) - we loved it. Regarding the recipes here are a few tips:1. the author always stipulates way more onion than necessary, so cut it by at least half.2. You can leave out the saffron - the recipe will still be good.3. You can substitute sour cream for Kashk (whey) - I do this all the time in the eggplant dip.

This is a great book for Iranian families around the world. Lots of great ideas for celebrating this lovely holiday with your children. I love her recipes and the photos are great.

I love that this cookbook has traditional recipes and information about the Persian New Year. The photos and descriptions are terrific. My only complaint is that some of the recipes have ingredients that are not easy to come by, and no substitutions are noted (nor is there info on whether some of the minor, hard to find ingredients could be omitted, if necessary).

It is a recipe book. This was an impulsive shopping but I am glad I did it. It is a nice book with good cooking recipes and some useful information about Iranian culture.

Lovely illustrations and simple and nice recipes. Nice book to share with kids and adults alike.My kids love it.

My 6 year old boy loves these books! He asked me "Do you know who my favorite author is?", I answer "Troy Cummings", and he says with a big smile "You know it!". He also has read the first 15 or so of the Magic Tree House books, and he likes those, but he gets much much more excited to read the Notebook of Doom series.He started to write one of his own notebook of doom books... so this has definitely encouraged him to be more creative. The monsters aren't that terrible, but the books made him nervous a few times, and it was a good conversation starter for how monsters are not real, and how being scared/nervous is healthy, and what it means to brave/courageous.

I feel like it has pretty hard to find reading level appropriate books for my son that he gets excited about. When I found these Notebook of Doom books, I knew I had a winner! My son loves these books. He has all but one in his collection now. This series is tied for 1st (with Fanny K Stein series and Dog Man) as his favorite books to read. We started reading these together when he was in 1st grade, he started reading them more on his own entering 2nd grade & is now entering 3rd and has been reading them 100% on his own for some time now. He connects with the characters and LOVES all the silly situations they get themselves into. I highly recommend these books.

It arrived yesterday on release day, and we couldn't put it down! Absolutely wonderful addition to the series. A big surprise inside! My kids and I love The Notebook Of Doom!

This was another fun read for me and my 6YO. We love this series and seeing the characters being developed is really fun. He's already excited for the next book even though we don't know what it is or when it will come out!

My kids (ages 6 & 8) love this series. This is the only series that they will occasionally remember to ask if the latest book is out yet. They get so excited when the latest book comes in the mail!

My six year old says "It is awesome! It's just awesome, yo!" We have read all the books in this series and pre-ordered the next one. Enjoy!

All of the Notebook of Doom books are a must read! My grandchildren loved them and it inspired them to write their own journals!

From looking at the cover, I thought FENWAY AND HATTIE would be clever, I thought it would be cute, I thought it would be funny...and it's all of those things...but it's more. Much more.It's a closely observed commentary (observed by a hilarious Jack Russell terrier, mind you) on human relationships and the struggles of a girl to grow and change, while staying grounded within her child self.No, seriously! I mean it! I cannot fathom how Victoria Coe pulls this off.The deep POV of our narrator, the dog Fenway, is insightful and utterly seamless from beginning to end. And what an earnest, bright (though often clueless), and likeable dog Fenway is! He's on the job 100% of the time, protecting his humans and doing what's right...or what he thinks is right, which unfortunately is not the same thing most of the time. His owner, Hattie, is not the only one who needs to grow and change in this story. Fenway does, too.The complex voice of Fenway as narrator is extraordinary. I alternated between laughing out loud, paragraph after paragraph, and suddenly feeling a little stab in my heart as the well-meaning terrier's feelings are hurt again and again by things he simply is not equipped to understand. Take this bit, for example, when he thinks he's been rejected by Hattie:"I drop down into the grass and lick my paw, like that's the part of me that hurts."There is much rich emotional and perspective-taking material here to mine for parents and teachers who read this with children. The kids themselves won't even notice the themes they are absorbing as they tear through this delicious doggy treat of a book on their own.But I'm taking the time here and now to notice, and to bow deeply to Victoria Coe. Well done.

What a fun story FENWAY AND HATTIE is! I knew right away it would be the perfect book for my 9-year-old daughter who absolutely LOVES dogs. She ended up reading the book in four days, then insisted I read the book so we could talk about it. Since the story is written through the dog, Fenway's, perspective, it brings to life the imagination of the reader. Now, my daughter cannot help but stop and wonder how her dog, Charles, views the world. Fenway called Hattie's mother Food Lady. My daughter said our dog, Charles, calls me Lap Lady. This is a great book for any child and elementary classroom.

This story is completely told from the canine perspective. My students fell in love with Fenway. He is an extremely lovable character who really does mean to do what is expected of him. Unfortunately, he does not always understand. Fenway is so lovable and he is definitely a character. He does his best to protect his beloved owner, Hattie from horrible thunderstorms, wicked floors, and nasty squirrels. Our class highly recommends this book to both boys & girls. We hope that you enjoy reading Fenway & Hattie as much as we did.

I'll be honest, I expected this book to be OK. Prior to reading it with my 4th grade class, I thought to myself that the kids would like it because it was about a dog, but it would probably be pretty "fluffy" and not a truly memorable book that would teach my kiddos much. Boy, was I wrong!! This book was fabulous!! It was funny. It was heartwarming. But more than that, it was so well written. Victoria J Coe perfectly captured the point of view of Fenway, the dog. Her way of describing events from a dog's perspective was creative and lead to some wonderful classroom discussion. Not only that, many of my reluctant readers were excited to finish this book AND find the next. Our class LOVED it!!

What's not to love about this book? It's written from the dog's point of view. Fenway is such a funny, excited dog full of personality and his adventures with his best Friend Hattie are always entertaining. I loved reading this book and sharing with my students.

I loved this sweet story of a dog and his girl, but what makes it unique and extra special is thr voice that Victoria J. Coe gives to Fenway as he tells the story. The imaginative names that Fenway gives to the people and things around him made me feel like I could see into the mind of this dog, and other dogs too! What a fun POV! Mg students will love this series!

This book, masterfully written from a dog's point of view, will make you laugh like crazy and feel all the feels. Fenway and his earnest zest for life will charm, delight, inspire, and excite you to the point that you'll be sorry to reach the last page. Fortunately for us all, there are TWO sequels, and the adventures that "best buddies" Fenway and Hattie have somehow manage to get better and better!

Bought to read to my 2nd grade classes in my school library. Lots of great teaching opportunities built in, especially on Point of View. They loved Fenway's adventures and are looking forward to the next books.

Beware that this is the first edition, and there is a newer second edition published in 1994. The product description is for the second edition, which this book is not. The description is misleading and is being used to sell an old book. Accidental? Hard to believe. Get the second edition, not this one.

Admittedly, this one tends to be a bit pricey. But, the content is pure gold for any programmer. Nowhere is the Prolog paradigm better conveyed than here. And, it is of little value to you if you attempt to learn prolog with a mindset of some other language. Prolog is unique and demands a unique way of looking at computer programming in general. It is dated a bit in that it does not cover all the latest developments in Prolog/AI research but no other Prolog books provide the foundational understanding that it does. Get this one for a solid foundation and then build on it with others. See my listmania list of AI Language books for suggestions of followup titles.

After Clocksin and Mellish this is the book to get. It develops the fundamental ideas of the core language, and, continuing in the same style of proper language use and applied computer science avoids being esoteric as it pushes the reader to higher order programming naturally. Recommended! Bought mine second hand in excellent condition. Shame it's not available on Kindle.

This, to me, is one of the 4 best books on computer programming. Unfortunately, it is hard. Not because the book is poorly written - it is like a wonderful story, but because understanding how to think declaratively after being taught something like C or Java is like someone giving you a pair of wings when you're a mudfish.Thinking declaratively changes how you think about problems and how you write code. It's a career changing experience. This is a great book; very clear writing and descriptions. To be honest, I haven't given Prolog, or this book, the time and effort that it deserves - whenever I need to quickly knock a script together I keep falling back to my imperative tendencies, frustrated but knowing that there is likely to be a more elegant declarative solution if I just persevered. I would love to have the time to sit down and methodically work through this book. I believe that I would gain a lot from doing so. Instead I've usually dipped in, late at night when half asleep, to admire the elegance of declarative programming - but this has helped me keep the faith that programming can be an elegant and thoughtful exercise.One day I will find the time to study and ponder Sterling's wonderful work (and then I will rewrite this review with insightful comments and witty rejoinders).

"The Art of Prolog" tries to be top notch: Beautifully crafted book, clear partition in four parts (Logic Programs, The Prolog Language, Advanced Prolog Programming Techniques, Applications), and most programs are very beautiful.Anyhow the authors often try to explain the trivial sometimes even the shallow, then they often do not spent much effort in explaining the difficult. There is an unusual large amount of references to other parts of this book: backward and worse forward. The choice to explain first logic programming and then Edinburgh Prolog as an approximate implementation is especially unfortunate in this respect: A high level of redundancy separated by an entire book part with references to each other.Most of the small programs are very beautiful and true gems. Though the reader should not foul herself, the development of most programs did last many years of brilliant people. I did not get a feel for the difficulty of developing a reasonable prolog program on my own.I really liked the Background section at the end of each chapter: A very sound view to the world around the book.If you are somewhat knowledgeable of the usual AI and CS problems, you will have a lot of pleasure to the elegant approach a prolog program can have to tackle many of them.
