I have had this book for a while now and as a amateur photographer I refer back to it often. It has so much info that is written in everyday language for anyone to understand. Because it is written in everyday words and simply put it was much easier for me to understand. I have taken a photo class and found I was more confused as they always spoke above my understanding. I decided to purchase this book after seeing some info in a magazine. I am so glad I did. I have now been sharing it with my granddaughter as she is picking up the camera now. It's easy explanation is so wonderful. I say if you are an amateur photographer or helping someone else, it is well worth getting this book. It covers so many topics that you always have questions in and it explains each one thoroughly. It has 12 chapters. It deals with each topic and then the last chapter is putting it all together. It even has a chapter dedicated to the seasons. It has beautiful photos with the settings that were used under each photo that gives you a better understanding of which setting was used and why. Love this book.
Excellent book. After just a couple days with this book and my first DSLR camera I'm already improving my abilities. The book does an excellent job of illustrating what the different settings on a DSLR do such using actual images along with their settings to show you what things such as changing the aperture size and or shutter speed will do to your photo.The great thing is, it goes beyond that and talks about color composition, and setting up your image for the best impact.The authors then go even farther and give ideas and tips on organizing your photo collection so that you can always find the images you're looking for. I've learned all of this and I still haven't even finished the book yet. If you're spending the money on a DSLR camera and you're new to them you'd be a fool not to spend the extra few bucks on this book.
I bought a Nikon D40 several years ago because I got a great deal on it. I knew nothing about it and used it only once or twice on auto with an auto-focus lens. I found myself just using the camera on my cell phone for 99% of the photos I took. On the advice of my son, an awesome photographer, I ordered "Beyond Snapshots" and have been very pleased. Within a couple days I changed the setting on my Nikon from Auto to Manual and haven't looked back! This book is easy to understand and well thought out. Well worth the cost!
I bought a dslr camera a little over a year ago, and I've slowly been learning more about photography. This book is exactly what it promises to be--an overview of basic digital photography principles (like ISO, aperture and shutter speed) and a guide to boost the impact, artistry, and playfulness of the pictures you take. I've read other photography guides and gotten advice from various sources as I've been learning, but this book was probably the best way for me to finally get to understanding "the exposure triangle." Plus, it made me excited to take pictures!The writers, Rachel Devine and Peta Mazey are fun, relaxed and easy to understand. Their enthusiasm for photography really translates into the page, so this is far from the dry, technical guides I tried to wade my way through in the past. Devine and Mazey inspire their readers with tips and practice ideas, and examples of their own work. What a great guide!
Good technique tips, the photo editing software section is a little outdated, but the basics of what to look for in editing are still there. Nice book if you’re a beginner.
I've had this book for a couple months now. It's been read through a couple times, then I marked some pages for quick reference. I've even loaned it to friends who love it. Great tips.
The fundamentals of making a good photo don't change -- only the hardware does. This book contains much of the info in Kodak's classic "How to make Good Pictures". ( Our copy is the 30th edition, from 1957.) The additional material on using a digital camera is excellent. It is a great help especially for those who have new digital cameras which do not come with a printed manual (Sony -- are you listening???).
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife following the purchase of a new D-SLR.She seemed very pleased with it and has been using some of the ideas in the last month. She seemed pleased with the focus of the book, which seems to be more 'family / friend' picture oriented.I would buy this again.
