Angie Dovage has a new neighbor. Reese Fernandez is good-looking, athletic, and is at the center of some odd going-ons. Angie is intrigued though he's really not her type and starts following him around, trying to understand the mystery. She finds more than she bargained for with paranormal happenings such as non-human beings and murders of crows.I enjoyed this book so much. I thought it might be a YA story about the odd girl, the handsome guy, and the mean girl when I started reading, but it soon became something very different. The supernatural aspects were intriguing, drawing the reader into this world of the remnants of magic. The harbingers of death and the beekeepers were not something I've read about before and made this book truly unique.Angie was so much more than the odd girl trope as was Reese much darker than the good-looking guy. The other characters supplemented the story perfectly. All-in-all, the result was a surprising and satisfying conclusion to a beautifully written story.

"Her love breaks his curse. But his love spells her death."That along with the cover had my eyeballs all getty to read this as well as the desire to add this to my shelves. I feel like the little mermaid, but instead of trinkets and such, it's books, ♪"I want mooooore!"♪ (twirls with book).Ok, enough of that silliness, back to my review. This is a great paranormal romance/ sci-fi apocalyptic read. It had a bit of everything nicely incorporated into the story and plot.As with many books, it starts out with the new neighbor or family moving in with the mystery character, but I enjoyed the twist and the author's unique style. Move over vampires, werewolves and angels, we have something different here. I won't say what exactly because I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read this book yet.I liked that there's realism and gives a bit of background looks into some of the characters without going overboard. There's the haunting of loss and death and there's the selflessness of love and the facing of fears.I somewhat had an idea of the ending, but knew it could go in either direction.I'd recommend picking this book up and giving it a read.

When I first saw the cover of this book on Goodreads, I knew I had to read it. Black Bird of the Gallows is a paranormal romance enriched with fierce characters, unique legends, and a creepy protagonist. This intriguing book is a constant page-turner leading up to a finale that is truly frightening but also heart warming. One of favorite aspects of the book was the strong chemistry between Angie and Reece. Both characters are quite different in many ways, but their oppositions strengthen the attraction between them. The strong pairing of trust and brutal honesty that they share with each other allows their relationship to mature. I love that even when they have landslides and swarms of bees threatening their lives, they continue to protect each other.Overall, I think I enjoyed this book because, although it sticks to many traditional characteristics of young adult novels, Black Bird of the Gallows is littered with new and innovative myths and legends. Those who are considered cursed still believe in redemption, and evil is provided karma-tic relief. I like that the author does not shy away from portraying the characters with their everyday adolescent struggles. Instead, these characters are provided groundwork to discover who they are through actions and reactions. They are challenged by everyday struggles and evildoers, and their hearts and minds are forced into different tug-of-war battles.More importantly, the friendships in this novel had me smiling ear-to-ear and swooning. Self-identity, inner strength, and understanding true friendships are common themes that encompass this novel. Every page will have your eyes brimming with tears from laughter, heartache, or the simple acknowledgement that the hardest choices in life can result in the best endings.

I have to give the utmost props to Meg Kassel for this debut novel. I had to go back and double check that I had read that right... that this is her debut novel. It absolutely blew me away.Kassel has a beautiful way about her story. The words breeze by on the pages, so easy to read and become engulfed in. I couldn't put it down. Not only were the characters some of my favorite that I've read lately, they stuck with me long after I finished this novel. The mythological aspect of the plot transported me to this world that I didn't know existed and I wanted more of.Beautifully crafted, completely transfixing.... I couldn't put this one down. I'll be buying a few paperback or hardcover copies for my student's library in my classroom. I have several students in mind that I know will absolutely love this novel. The ease with which I was sucked into this novel reminded me of the first time I read Shelly Crane's Significance Series, JL Armentrout's Lux Series, and Amy Bartol's Premonition Series.I can't say enough about how much I loved this novel.Overall, huge 5 stars (Amazing Debut!)Cover: BEAUTIFUL! 5 StarsCharacters: 5 StarsPlot: 5 Stars <-- I LOVED the world building - the Harbingers, the Beekeepers, the Other characters... Amazing creativityClimax: ACK! I was petrified! 5 StarsEnding: 5 Stars! Thank goodness that this one ended on a high note! I was so worried that I went through the entire novel only to be sad by the ending but it lived up to my expectations!
