This book has great insights into contracts, business models, etc, but it's not really about "starting [A] practice."When most people think about "starting [A] practice," they think about actually starting an independent practice from the ground up, but this book really isn't about that. A much more appropriate title would be "Starting IN practice" or "Starting practice," and for someone coming out of residency and joining an established organization they'll find a lot of useful information regarding negotiations, work/life balance, etc here. I actually WOULD recommend it for everyone starting their first job out of residency. But if you're looking to start [A] practice (as I am), you're going to be disappointed. There's no information on incorporating or running your own business or any other ownership or managerial aspect. Thus a low rating due to the misleading title (on an otherwise good book).
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I could not put this book down once I picked it up to read it. I am finishing up my 3 year podiatric residency now. Based on this title I thought it was about starting your own medical practice (as in a solo private practice office), but it is really about the transition from residency into medical practice employment - primarily either employment by a hospital or as an associate in a private group practice. However - I THINK EVERY SINGLE RESIDENT - MD, DO, DPM - SHOULD READ THIS BOOK! It is full of amazing tips and things I did not realize existed and that every resident physician needs to know - such as nose and tail malpractice insurance coverage, financial advice, negotiating contract pros / cons, employment options, etc. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book - it is worth the money and worth the time to read if you are in residency. It would not hurt to read this book prior to starting residency (great gift for medical school graduation), but I think it would be of most value to re-read this book halfway through your residency so that the tips are fresh in your mind when you are starting to plan your next steps after residency training.
I have been puzzled with the lack of knowledge many of us as physicians may have in finance, investing, preparing for retirement and financial success. ACGME and Training Programs do not prepare you for "real-life medicine" once you are out of training. How you prepare for those aspects is as important as to make an accurate diagnosis on a patient's condition with a treatment plan formulation, no matter which specialty you have. "Doctors Guide to Starting Your Practice Right" is a gem of precious advice. Dr. Fawcett's systematic approach may help you to approach difficult situations in professional and even personal aspects of your life. It is very difficult to come by an advisor like him, who not only shares the profession, understands physicians' reality and can give a truthful, unbiased advice not to mention that he has the knowledge at home from a corporate accountant as wife. Highly recommended!. Thank you Dr. Fawcett!
Dr. Fawcett gives the critical advice all residents of all specialties need as they make the monumental transition from resident to attending physician. The book starts with a focus on the big picture and then provides the nuts and bolts details needed to make the decisions that shape a career. The book is very well-written and engaging, and I have returned to it on several occasions as a reference.
Great book for a new doc!
One of a kind book on opening a medical practice that you won’t find anywhere. Will save you hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars over your career. Highly recommend.
The content is basic content that you can find online or that I felt like I already knew.
I wish this book existed during my residency. I'm in my first year of attendingship facing the challenges of debt from the years in medical school and the astounding interest acquired throughout residency. All-in-all, I estimate I spent over 300 hours educating myself in how to find the right job/what to look for, how to plan for retirement (especially when all normal physicians are getting a late start), and how to invest....yes, I probably spent more time researching and reading books and blogs on these topics than I did studying for step one of boards; mostly because the majority of my superiors had no insight into these matters and apppeared to be drowning as well. This book summed up the basics of my research in about three hours, which is how long I spent reading it cover to cover. One of the most helpful books out there for medical students and residents and young physicians...resonates with truth and a simple conservative approach to freedom. Cory Fawcett has the potential to free physicians from the chains of debt as Jack Bogle enabled the masses to invest conservatively towards financial freedom.
