This is one of 13 books on this subject that I bought in November 2008. It is a reprint of the fall 1913 - spring 1914 catalog. I used it in my research of Sears kit homes for a few years and eventually bought a second copy. I have three of the original catalogs now from that run and I can tell you they were not this cheap and they are rare at that! This is a rare catalog and a bargain compared to what the real catalogs cost. The actual catalog shows a few of the models in color as you see on this reprint's cover. For the novice this is a great book. It has all of the models offered from that publication which shows the pages as they were in the catalog. You get the image of the finished home, the floor plan/sketch with measurements, included is a description as well as specifications. I recommend this book if you are looking to match a Sears model offered/built in the 19teens or if you are interested in early teens housing styles!
This is a reprint of an old Sears Roebuck catalog. It's fun to go around older neighbors and find the old advertisements for the homes and see how much they originally cost to build.
I grew up in a Sears Roebuck home of this period, and we think we've identified the model, though the local carpenter who put it together did make some minor changes in layout. It came in a boxcar, neighbors helped my grandparents bring it to the farm 3 1/2 miles from town by wagon and it was stored in the covered runway of the corn crib till construction was finished. My family lived in it until my widowed mother moved 25 miles into the county seat where she worked in the area hospital, after we children went to college. It deteriorated with no one living there, and was eventually torn down to replace a barn on a neighbor's farm that had been lost to fire...he also made a handsome garage addition to his home with the last of the lumber..
Like reading about the type of home I grew up in and the older homes that I delivered news papers to as a kid. Thanks!
I am having so much fun going through this book! Love the floor plans, prices and etc. Now I want books on 20’s through 60’s, seeing how the houses change every decade.
Very interesting. There are some here in South Florida where I live. Well built. Similar products are still being made. Dean Buildings and Cabin Fever, both of South Florida are worth looking at.I bought and put up a Dean commercial building 30 years ago, and not had to spend a cent on maintenance.
