I am a retired high school English teacher who just accepted a long term sub job in a kindergarten class. I taught kindergarten one year many ages ago - and I do mean ages! Cunningham's book is just what I needed to refresh my knowledge and gain ideas on presenting phonics in the most supportive and helpful way to kindergarten students. The book includes everything a kindergarten teacher could need: forms for assessment, instructional activities, and pictures of what these things look like in the classroom. Patricia Cunningham is a genius.
I'm teaching from this (3rd year literacy class for K-5 future teachers) and it is filled with lots of clear examples. We have had many good conversations about the topics. Some of the descriptions are a bit densely worded but I can help the students figure those out.
I can't say enough about this book and how it changed the experience of the children in my classroom. As a volunteer teacher in a developing country, I had no experience and even less guidance when I began to teach elementary school last year. I brought many books on children's literacy with me and this is the *only* one I used. Patricia Cunningham knows how children learn and understands the basic tools that teachers must have if they are going to teach reading and writing. About 1/4 of my students were reading when I started the year, and by the end they could almost all form their own basic written sentences on paper and *all* of them could read very simple sentences. I would give this ten stars if I could. Buy it.
As I write this, this book is on back order. This is a great resource for primary teachers who would like explicit information on how to do a word wall and use many activities for using word families, etc. to teach phonics. But don't bother waiting for this book to be available again. Get the 3rd edition! It's worth the extra money. I purchased the 2nd edition several months ago, but when I examined the 3rd edition at the library, I noticed there seem to be many more activities and games for teaching phonics. The 3rd edition easily gets a 5+ star rating from me. It would be an invaluable resource, especially for new teachers! Making Words, by Cunningham and Hall is a good companion if you need help with the making words activities.
This book is one of those that you don't ever want to get rid of. I've been enrolled in my first semester teaching classes now and have heard this stressed by more than one of my professors. Suffice it to say, it's the truth.This book has ideas and activities that will help any teacher at any elementary grade from Kindergarten to fourth or fifth grade. It is a wonderful resource and handbook you won't want to sell back if you've had to purchase this for your elementary education classes.For current teachers looking for a quick reference guide of sorts to skills and ideas, this is one you'll want on your shelf. It is easy to access chapters and activities that can be pulled at a moments notice. My own professor still has this book from when she was in college, a much older edition that has some things changed, but still today it works for her just as this newer edition works for me and my peers and future teachers.This is a great book that doesn't make you search to find what you need, something most teachers would be happy to have and pull for reference and help. I highly recommend this and will continue to do so even years after I become a teacher myself.

There are some great tips in this book for teaching phonics that every teacher should use. Very entertaining almost like games.
This book is such a valuable resource for new teachers. My district uses the Four Blocks literacy model and is heavily influenced by the teachings of Patricia Cunningham. This book gives step by step, easy to follow explanations of practical phonetic activities that can be used in the classroom. It is clearly written and is an asset to any professional teacher's library. This is my third year teaching and wish someone had given this book to me in my first year. Highly recommended for teachers who want to improve their phonics block with easy, fun, and educational activities.
