Florence Nightingale was a member of an influential family in Victorian England. She became one of the most influential persons in that society: She went to Crimea, where England and France were at war with Tsarist Russia, at the urging of John Stuart Mill and Sidney Herbert. The British military hospitals were disgracefully filthy; the water supply contaminated; more wounded soldiers died in the hospitals from disease than from their wounds. At her urging, a Sanitary commission was dispatched to Scutari to survey conditions and mandate corrections. Nightingale was a Sanitarian -- preaching always that hygiene, fresh air, adequate nutrition were essential elements for life and for the care of the sick. At 17, searching for a vocation, she took a vow of chastity. (Note here that she was an Anglican, a denomination which derives many practices from its Catholic origins.) She was very devout -- as well as a very acute practitioner of sanitary practices and demanding of the women she trained as nurses. She was mathematically gifted and the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society. She developed graphic methods for conveying statistical information (one is named for her - the Nightingale Rose Diagram). In Scutari she contracted what was then called "Crimean Fever," or Remittent Fever -- now identified as Brucellosis -- a chronic, remittent illness. It is amazing how much malice is still directed toward her by many in the medical establishment who mutter that she contracted syphillis - which is not true. In her day the germ theory of disease was not developed (The work of Lister & Pasteur were in the future.) Her insistence on sanitation did much to reduce mortality among her patients. Having reformed the British Army hospitals - by designing a model which could be prefabricated & insisting on sanitation -she returned to England to establish the first secular education program for nurses - at St. Thomas Hospital - and to reform the civilian hospital system.
Every nurse - and every other caregiver - should read this book. These letters are just as relevant today as they were when Florence Nightingale wrote them.
When writing your nursing assignments you should use the original source and this book is one of those classic sources. These days nurses are wondering what nursing is all about and with this book you can get back to the basics of what kind of practice has made nursing so trusted and valued in today's economically driven healthcare.
This was a gift for my mother, who recently retired as a nurse (at age 80!) The book was very nicely bound, and the authentic reproduction (which had some markings on a few pages and a library stamp) gave it the look and feel of an authentic original. Very nice!
I love being a nurse
Very interesting look at nursing during her.time.compared to modern day!
I was amazed how much of Nightingales teachings are used today.
