These books are just so darn cute, we have quite a collection now. Blue Hat Green Hat will be read every night for all eternity but I do try to broaden horizons with others from their favorite Author.. Shes a great writer of kids books, love them for our 2 and 4 year olds.
This is cute, though the pages seem a bit cluttered (which would be hard to avoid for a counting book.) The various doggies each have a different sound they make, from bark, to whine, to howl. At the end a cat breaks the pattern.It isn't as inviting as some, to pick up and read to a non-verbal baby, which is what I am looking for at the moment in board books.My favorites of the Boynton books are "Blue Hat, Green Hat," "Moo, Baa, La-La-La," and after that would be "Barnyard Dance." I also just previewed "Snuggle Puppy" on YouTube (a great way to preview books), and THAT is the Boynton doggie book I SHOULD have ordered.For counting books (though not a board book, I think), I love Mem Fox's "Let's Count Goats." That is so much more than just counting, and with funny rhymes that roll off your tongue, it is a delight to read.Update: Now tested by two year old twin niece & nephew, one obssessed with dogs... This one falls a bit flat. Some mild interest with the different dog sounds, but they are bored before the end. The book also does not lend itself well to the actual counting. Many other books, with engaging stories, lend themselves better to stop & count something on the page. This one, you *might* get out the different dog sounds on the page before they are bored and wanting to turn the page or wander around. Forget about also pointing and counting on the cluttered page. The Snuggle Puppy, Going to Bed Book, Not The Hippopotamus (Daddy's wry reading voice, channeling David Attenborough, of the "but [pause] not the hippopotamus" part really livens that one up) , and Moo Baa Lalala are their favorites. Horns to Toes and Opposites are the other Boynton books they own that fall in the "not the favorite" category, that aren't bad, but only occasionally get read.Their other favorites outside of Boynton include Boom Chicka Boom, I am a Bunny (parents add sound effects to each page, even if it is just "pluck, pluck, pluck, pluck" for picking flowers, crunch for leaves, or wind sounds for snow), and Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball (I think the regular & board books may be different for this...they are both delightful.)
This book makes me hoarse, but I love it. My dog, Roxy comes in the room whenever I read it to my son to see what the heck is going on. It is a simple counting book. Each dog has a unique bark and the sound seems to fit the picture of each dog. By the time I get to 10 dogs my throat starts to hurt from the barking, but it's totally worth it to see the smile on my son's face.
My daughter loves this book. I hate this book. It’s an escalation of different barks until the end. It’s great the first time. After the 4,307th it has me questioning my sanity.
Bought this book and 3 other Sandra Boynton books (Are you A Cow?, Snuggle Puppy, Hippos Go Berserk) for Christmas gifts for my best friend's 2-year old and my boyfriend's niece who is almost a year old. I think they will be perfect for mom and dad to read to them, and the girls to begin to learn to read as they grow! They are board books-- thick and good quality, that will be easy for tiny hands to hold... or put in their mouth... or whatever... haha. This book will be a super fun one to read aloud... it has a lot of different "bark" noises for mom and dad (and kids, as they start to read) to try. It is also a counting book, so some learning along with fun! Adorable illustrations. For dog people with little ones, I highly recommend this book and Snuggle Puppy (also by Sandra Boynton). I am halfway tempted to buy another set just to keep for if I have kids of my own someday :)
This is such a cute little book. I purchase it as a gift for my nephew who's parents have a dog. It's the perfect size and I love that the pages are nice and think so that he can grab onto them. It's still a little early to tell but it would appear that this book should hold up pretty well because of how solid the binding is on the book. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in books for little ones who love dogs.
If you dislike being ridiculous for the sake of baby laughs, do not buy this book. Because once you get to woof-ing and arf-ing and bowwowwow-ing, you'll be doing it dozens of times in a row every day. But this also results in enormous amounts of toddler joy which is priceless.
I wanted to like this book more, but I find it hard to get through repeatedly. It teaches counting by having different dogs bark in their own unique voice a certain number of times. That is a fun concept, but in practice, the lesson gets a little lost in the noise. A few good points: it has fun, cartoonish illustrations and it elicits a lot of goofy sounds that are entertaining.
I don't know who was more tickled by this book- my daughter, or my husband who listened to me read it. This book is hilarious, as each dog has his own brand of bark. Be silly with your child as you count the dogs, and switch up the barks a bit and you have an instant classic in your household!Truth be told, we have very much enjoyed every Boynton book we have tried. These books will make memories that my daughter AND I will treasure years from now.
